Vibration diagnostics of electrical machines and compressors is a very important task for each industry.
There are three main kinds of compressors: centrifugal, piston and screw compressors.
This equipment is usually related to the process, wherein pressure jump takes place between inlets and outputs.
Vibration diagnostics of centrifugal compressors.
Centrifugal compressors generate high pressure due to speeding up and slowing down gas flow. Multi-blade impellers rotate within a housing. Gas passes to the impeller center and then it is centrifugally jetted out of the impeller. Some compressors have guide vanes that distribute equally the gas flow on impellers.
As the gas will be forced to the rim of the impeller, the velocity of the gas will increase for a little. As it will leave the impeller, it will run into a section called diffuser.
As a rule a diffuser is a divergent duct in a housing, which is called scroll (a scroll is a spiral-like divergent vane). The scroll slows down the gas flow and converts kinetic energy into pressure. To provide more pressure the scroll out-put is directed to the next impeller center.
Vibration diagnostics of piston compressors.
Constraction of a piston compressor has many similar features to an internal combustion engine: a piston driven with the crankshaft moves up and down within a cylinder (reciprocating motion).
Suction valves for intake of low-pressure gas and exhaust valves for release of high-pressure gas are mounted on the top of a cylinder.
Defects to be detected while vibration diagnostics of compressors with the device BALTECH VP-3470:
1) Centrifugal compressors have the same operation principle as fans and pumps and have to be analyzed in the same way. You have to pay more attention to possible unbalance, misalignment and bearing defects.
2) As for piston compressors reciprocating motion is natural, in their spectrum you can see peaks and several harmonics at the frequency of the rotation speed. If it were other machines, it would be a reason for detection of a potential play. But for this kind of machines such vibration is in general acceptable. Therefore it is important to perform rout measurements in repeated way. Only increase of a trend can denote a potential defect of a piston compressor. You have also to keep a check on bearing defects of a crankshaft and fixture vibration.
